libsonare solves an inverse acoustics problem: from the decay tail it estimates an equivalent shoebox room (volume, dimensions, per-band absorption) and the direct-to-reverberant ratio. The DRR plus the critical distance places the source at an estimated distance — a single channel reveals how far, not which direction, so the source is drawn as a full shell around the listener.
